Solo performer and audience
The text for this piece is taken from newspaper clippings in the archive of the Garman Ryan Collection at the New Art Gallery in Walsall (UK). I appropriated the aesthetic of John Cage’s lectures, but with a more irreverent approach to performance, similar to the visual artist Gavin Turk who manipulates popular culture and art history to create amusing pieces which mythologise his own life. I used chance procedures to cut up various texts about The Great Burstead Festival of Good Things (which took place in 1967) and fitted it to the syllabic patterns of the first and last pages of the Bible.
This idea was a development of a pervious performance called Shout the first and last pages of a book, which I created in 2009 to promote sixty_six_events, a global happening made in collaboration with Matthew Lee Knowles.
