written and performed by Andy Ingamells and Jacqueline Fletcher
When writing this piece we met several times in Limerick city, this being a convenient destination between our respective homes in Castlehacket Co. Galway and Ballyhea, Co. Cork. We discovered a shared interest in geology and the piece grew from the idea that we travel daily over a wide variety of different bedrocks as we drive across the country, yet these are almost always hidden from view. Using a bedrock map from Geological Survey Ireland we traced our two separate journeys, noting each type of bedrock we travel over. The names of each formation serve as a fixed media track and audio score, narrated by robotic voices reminiscent of GPS turn-by-turn navigation. Each geological type is assigned a particular sonic texture, bowing technique or timbre, creating an approximate sonic map of our two journeys to Limerick overlaid on top of each other.
